Mineral fibre tile ceilings
Mineral fibre tiles are the standard lay-in ceiling tile in UK offices, schools and shops: lightweight, inexpensive, and made in hundreds of textures and edge details. Most achieve a high reaction-to-fire class and reasonable sound absorption as standard.

How we do it
The choice that matters most is the edge. Square-edge tiles sit flush with the grid face and are the cheapest; tegular tiles drop slightly below the grid for a shadow line that hides small grid imperfections; microlook edges pair with a 15mm narrow grid for a finer look in reception areas.
Thickness and density change the performance. Thin, light tiles absorb sound well but let more noise pass through the void to the next room; denser tiles block more noise but absorb less. We pick the tile to the room rather than defaulting to the cheapest board.
What's involved
- Edges: square, tegular, microlook
- Typical thickness: 15–20mm
- Common reaction-to-fire classes: A1 or A2-s1,d0 (check the datasheet)
- Humidity-resistant versions for warmer, damper rooms
- Cut tiles at margins finished to the same edge as full tiles
Best for: Offices, classrooms, retail back-of-house and any area where tiles will be lifted for maintenance.

Questions people ask
Are mineral fibre tiles the same as the old polystyrene tiles?
No. Mineral fibre is made largely from stone wool or similar fibres bound into a board and is non-combustible or limited-combustibility. Old stuck-on polystyrene tiles are a different, much poorer product.
Can I mix new tiles into an old ceiling?
You can, but older tiles yellow with age, so new ones stand out. If more than a few tiles need replacing in one room we usually suggest re-tiling the whole room in the same pattern so it matches.
Which tile is best for an open-plan office?
Usually a Class A or Class B sound-absorbing tile in a 600 × 600 grid. It takes the edge off reverberation without the cost of a specialist acoustic system.
