MF plasterboard ceilings

An MF ceiling is a concealed steel framework of primary channels and furring sections, hung from the soffit and lined with plasterboard. It gives a smooth, seamless ceiling that is skimmed or taped and painted like a wall.

How we do it

MF is the choice when you want a plain plastered look, a fire-resisting lining, or a ceiling that steps, curves or forms bulkheads. Unlike a grid ceiling, nothing is accessible after it is finished, so we plan access panels at valves, dampers and junction boxes before boarding.

The board type sets the performance: standard wallboard for general areas, fire-resisting board in one or two layers where a fire rating is required, moisture-resistant board in washrooms, and acoustic or impact boards where those matter.

What's involved

  • Primary channels and furring sections at maker's centres
  • Single or double layer plasterboard to the required rating
  • Tape-and-joint or full skim finish
  • Access panels planned to services before boarding
  • Shadow gaps and edge trims for a sharp perimeter

Best for: Receptions, corridors, toilets, stairs, plant-room linings and anywhere a seamless ceiling is wanted.

Questions people ask

Is an MF ceiling better than a grid ceiling?

Neither is better; they do different jobs. Grid ceilings are cheaper and keep the void accessible. MF looks cleaner and can be fire-rated, but you need access panels to reach anything above it.

Can an MF ceiling be fire-rated?

Yes, using fire-resisting board in a tested build-up. The rating comes from the whole system as tested, so we follow the board maker's specification exactly.

How long before an MF ceiling can be painted?

Once jointing compound or skim is fully dry. That is usually a few days, depending on temperature and ventilation.
