Does a suspended ceiling give fire protection?

Every ceiling tile has a reaction-to-fire class describing how it behaves in a fire, and most mineral fibre tiles perform well. Only a complete, tested ceiling system installed exactly to its specification provides fire resistance for a stated time, such as 30 or 60 minutes.

What is reaction to fire?

It describes how much a material contributes to a fire: how easily it ignites, how fast flame spreads, and how much smoke and burning droplets it produces. It is classed under BS EN 13501-1. Many mineral fibre tiles are A1 or A2-s1,d0. Approved Document B sets minimum classes for wall and ceiling linings, stricter in circulation spaces and escape routes than in small rooms.

What is fire resistance?

It is how long a whole construction keeps fire contained, measured in minutes and classed under BS EN 13501-2. For a ceiling it comes from testing the full build-up of grid, tiles or boards, hangers and clips, either on its own (BS EN 1364-2) or as part of a floor. Change any component and the rating may no longer apply.

When do I need a fire-rated ceiling?

When the fire strategy relies on the ceiling to protect a void, a structure or an escape route. That is decided by the fire engineer or Building Control, not the ceiling contractor. If you are unsure, ask for the fire strategy before ordering.

What breaks a fire rating?

Unprotected light fittings and openings, missing hold-down clips, the wrong hanger centres, substitute tiles, and later trades cutting holes. Keep the product data and installation record, and tell anyone working above the ceiling that it is a fire-rated system.

More questions

Is a fire-rated ceiling the same as fire-resistant tiles?

No. A tile alone has a reaction-to-fire class. Fire resistance belongs to the whole tested system.

Can I add downlights to a fire-rated ceiling?

Only with protection the system allows, such as fire hoods or approved fittings.
